Its finally here! Version 3.70 of Chronon with Java 8 support.

Debugging Lambdas is a breeze when you have a time travelling debugger. Actions speak louder than words, so here is a video showing it all:

For users upgrading from previous versions:

The on disk recording version has changed. So you wont be able to open recordings made from previous versions when you upgrade. Keep that in mind before you do so.

Intellij IDEA plugin should also be updated shortly by Jetbrains and be available soon.

DripStat – A new Java APM Service

DripStat is a new Java APM (Application Performance Monitoring) Service.

We saw other APM solutions on the market and found that they were:

      1. Too overpriced
      2. Not designed with Java in mind

DripStat at $20/JVM/month is the most affordable APM in the world and is designed specifically for Java.

      We hope you like it!

Chronon 3.20 released with preliminary Java 8 support

Today’s 3.20 release contains preliminary support for Java 8.

What exactly does ‘preliminary’ mean here?

        • Code written in pre java 8 versions, when compiled with Java 8 compiler will record and work fine with Chronon.
        • When running on jvm 8, you need to manually pass the -noverify argument to the jvm.
In the case of the Eclipse plugin, add it to your launch configuration in the ‘JVM arguments’ section.
        • Lambdas and Default methods are still not supported, so we recommend you exclude code containing these from recording.

We are in the process of adding support for the invokedynamic jvm instruction which will allow us to properly record lambdas and all Java 8 features. This preliminary release is to allow you to compile with Java 8.

Also this release contains tons of bugfixes so we highly recommend upgrading.

Chronon comes to Intellij IDEA. Official partnership with Jetbrains

Intellij IDEA integration has been the most requested feature for Chronon. The Intellij plugin request thread is the highest voted thread on our forums, and we constantly get mails from people asking for explicit Intellij support.

Today, I can finally publicly announce that Chronon and Jetbrains have made an official partnership to bring Chronon to Intellj IDEA! Details below:

Which version of Intellij will contain Chronon?
The Chronon plugin will ship as part of Intellij IDEA 13.1 Ultimate Edition.

Do i have to pay separately for Chronon Intellij plugin?
No. Chronon will be FREE for users of Intellij IDEA!

Are all Chronon products going free?
No. The Intellij Chronon plugin will only allow you to record from inside Intellij IDEA. To record outside Intellij, you will still need to use either Chronon Recording Server or Embedded Chronon.

Is the Chronon Intellij plugin developed by Chronon Systems or Jetbrains?
The Chronon plugin is developed by Jetbrains. It will still ship with our official recorder and underlying tech is still ours but the UI/plugin portion is done by Jetbrains. While we do provide them with full technical support on developing the best possible plugin, ultimately they decide what goes in and what gets left on the cutting floor.

With recordings made in Intellij be compatible with recordings from Eclipse, and other Chronon products?
Since the Intellij Chronon plugin will still use our official recorder/unpacker, a Chronon recording made from Eclipse or Chronon Recording Server or Embedded Chronon can still be opened in Intellij and vice versa.

          Start using it now!

You can use Chronon with the latest Intellij 13.1 EAP right now!

Here are the instructions on the official Intellij blog:

DripStat – Java Performance Monitoring Service + Realtime MMO Game

              Today we are releasing DripStat.

              What is DripStat?

DripStat is a Java/Scala Performance Monitoring Service.

              Is there a twist?
              Of course!
Even though DripStat is currently free, the community needs to ‘earn’ more free features. That’s why DripStat is also designed like a Realtime MMO Game.

The way it works is, you either:

              1. Connect more JVMs
              2. Play the DripStat Game

The points accumulated by doing either of those ‘upgrade’ the entire service to a new ‘level’ offering free features for everyone! There will eventually be a paid portion, but what you ‘earn’ is what you keep for free.

              Umm.. What?!
As crazy as it sounds, it gets crazier. Within 24 hours of dripstat.com going live, before we were even ready to announce it on this blog, people have already crossed Level 1 of DripStat! Heck, we have close to a 100 people already signed up for the service. We thought it would take a month to get there….

But enough talking, try it yourself:
              dripstat.com/game

and dont forget to Connect your JVM.
